Upcycle (v):
1.Artistic reuse; taking by-products or waste materials and transforming them into something of greater quality;
2.A fashion designer’s first steps towards environmental sustainability.
I think it is safe to say: the planet needs our help.The more I have seen through my international travels,the more strongly I feel about this. In my daily life I follow the ”less is more” mentality. However, I started to see the potential in my work environment. And as a result,I began to do research on how I could be helping to save the planet as a designer.As I learned more about up cycling,I saw the potential for it as a ” DIY” approach to fashion. I quickly realized the true power of up cycling as I began designing entire collections with these methods.Now, the newest Celia Dragouni collection is the result of expanding my sustainability practices: combining clothes made of sustainable materials,vintage fabrics,fabrics from past collections and more.And I will continue to mix up cycling with my inspirational designs.My personal passions surrounding our planet and my work as a designer,have given me a unique opportunity to stand out in a way that I am proud of.After all,with all of our efforts towards sustainability,why not incorporate the remaking of history in our fashion? …just as each old tablecloth hold stories of intimate family gatherings,the beautiful white wedding dresses I design from them will hold their own incredible memories of a bride’s special day …just as letting down the curtains on a rainy day gives us a comfort from the outside,the silk shawls I make from them give us a stylish option to stay cozy on a breezy evening on the Greek islands …just as our used jeans hold countless experiences ,the homemade patches I add to them,give them a new beginning, perhaps for a new you …just as the inspirational ancient cave drawings have amazed us for decades,the addition of them to modern jackets gives an inspirational uniqueness for our daily outing.As I am inspired by old fabrics and materials,I hope you will all take inspiration from my newest collection and the value of up cycling is bringing – and will continue to bring – to the fashion industry.
